Daily Excursions

Ancient Pompeii + Vesuvius Volcan.

Pompei : A complete immersion in the daily life of the city at the moment of the eruption in 79 A.D. You visit the forum with its public and religious buildings, including a patrician house (domus. The ancient cobble stoned streets, already intersecting at right angle into each other, will reveal their brothels, their shops and bars, the theater and the plaster casts, moulds of the people crystallized in the moment and position in which they died

Vesuvius : The only active volcano of the continent, it dominates the bay of Naples. After 79 A. D. when the towns at its feet were destroyed, it erupted frequently until 1631 when there was another violent explosion. Afterwards there was a period of inactivity until 1799 – then another series of eruptions were alternated by periods of calm. The last eruption was in 1944. Mt Vesuvius is the only active volcano in Continental Europe, the most populated and it is also the most extensively studied volcano on the Earth. The current shape of the volcano is the result of the continual alternation between "explosive" type eruption, which have produced pyroclastic deposits. It is possible to climb up the volcano and walk around the rim to see the crater.

Paestum + Castelcivita Caves

Paestum : Founded around the end of the 7th century BC[1] by colonists from the Greek city of Sybaris, and originally known as Poseidonia. The main features of the site today are the standing remains of three major temples in Doric style, dating from the first half of the 6th century BC. These were dedicated to Hera and Athena, although they have traditionally been identified as a basilica and temples of Neptune and Ceres, owing to 18th-century mis-attribution.The temple of Hera, built around 550 BC by Greek colonists, is the oldest surviving temple in Paestum. Eighteenth-century archaeologists named it "The Basilica" because they mistakenly believed it to be a Roman building. A basilica in Roman times was a civil building, not a religious one. Inscriptions revealed that the goddess worshiped here was Hera. Later, an altar was unearthed in front of the temple, in the open-air site usual for a Greek altar; the faithful could attend rites and sacrifices without entering the cella. The nearby temple, the second temple Temple of Hera, was built in about 450-460 BC. It has been variously thought of as a temple dedicated to Poseidon. The Temple of Hera II has nothing in common to the first temple, reason being for its symmetrical style for its columns. Also every column does not have a normal 20 flutes on each column but it has 24 flutes. The Temple of Hera II also has a wider column and a smaller spacing for the placing of the columns. The temple was also found to be used to worship more then just Hera but also Zeus and another uknown god. There are visible on the east side the remains of two altars, one large and one smaller. The smaller one is a Roman addition, built when they cut through the larger one to build a road to the forum. It is also possible that the temple was originally dedicated to both Hera and Zeus; some offertory statues found around the larger altar are thought to demonstrate this identification. On the highest point of the town, some way from the other temples, is the temple of Athena. It was built in about 500 BC, and was for some time incorrectly thought to have been dedicated to Ceres. The architecture is transitional, being partly in the Ionic mode and partly early Doric. Three mediaeval Christian tombs in the floor show that the temple was at one time used as a Christian church. All three temples have undergone some renovation and repair in recent years. Close access is allowed, but entry by visitors into the buildings is no longer permitted.

Castelcivita Caves : Castelcivita Cave is a horizontal cave with many formations. It is also an important prehistoric site. The huge entrance at the floor of a lovely valley was inhabited during the Upper Paleolithic Era, about 40,000 years ago. The cave is located a few kilometers from the medieval town Castelcivita, which was built high on a hill like a fortification. The cave of Castelcivita has also been called Grotte del Diavolo (Devils Cave), Grotte di Spartaco (Cave of Spartacus) and Grotte Principe di Piemont (Cave of the Prince of Piemont).

Amalfi + Positano

Amalfi is the place that gives name to a splendid road, a 59 km long ribbon that goes from Meta di Sorrento to Vietri sul Mare. The first jewel is Positano with its narrow streets submerged under thousands of linen and cotton clothes that they sell in colorful little shops. Then Conca dei Marini with its ceramic stores above the Emerald Grotto, with its fabolous color and stalagtites and stalagmites and an underwater Crib.Of course afterwards is Amalfi , where the 13th century Cathedral stands out, with the majestic staircase of 62 steps, the bell tower, the museum , the cript and the statue of S. Andrew, which , on the 27 of june is taken on a procession out at sea. But perhaps the diamond is Ravello. Located 350 mt above the sea level, is a special place all built in the norman/sicilian style. Villa Rufolo, where Wagner found inspiration for the "Garden of Klingsor, II act of the Parsifal, and Villa Cimbrone, area in this world but yet not of it. Words cannot describe the views and the feeling when you sit on those terraces. The romanesque cathedral of S. Pantaleone and its mosaics are the icing on the cake.
